How we support collectors
Collectors—including waste pickers, buy-back centres, cooperatives, SMMEs, and waste management companies—play a vital role in the collection and recycling value chain. They link consumer recycling efforts with recyclers, helping ensure recyclable packaging reaches recycling facilities. Recyclers then process these materials into reusable forms and supply them to manufacturers for the production of new products.
PETpro supports collectors of all sizes and stages of operation. Our assistance is tailored to meet different needs, helping emerging businesses gain a strong start while enabling established operations to grow, strengthen their capacity, and increase collection volumes.
Infrastructure and equipment support
PETpro supports collection projects by providing infrastructure and equipment that help increase recycling activities, improve efficiency, and enhance the quantity and quality of recyclables collected. We also help make the transport and storage of recyclable materials more practical and effective. Our support includes trolleys, trailers, bulk bags, personal protective equipment (PPE), baling machines, and other essential tools supplied to waste pickers, buy-back centres, cooperatives, SMMEs, and waste management companies.
Training and development
PETpro works with municipalities and other organisations to empower collectors through mentorship and training in entrepreneurship and business development. By supporting the informal sector, PETpro and its partners help create a fairer and more recognised role for them within the value chain. PETpro also focuses on increasing community awareness and building stronger relationships with municipalities to promote kerbside collection initiatives and extend recycling collection into new areas.
The waste picker service fee
PETpro has invested significant effort in integrating waste pickers and supporting their registration on the Tanzanian Waste Picker Registration System (TAWPRS).
Through this system, registered individuals are eligible to receive a monthly service fee based on the recyclables they collect. PETpro is also collaborating with various service providers to identify efficient trading systems and payment platforms that enable smooth and reliable fee payments.
